Since "finishing" the bike, I have made a few minor changes. Namely, I removed the crappy eBay mirrors and put the stock mirrors back on. The eBay mirrors were not really long enough to adjust into a position where I could see more than my shoulders, and they were just a little to obnoxious anyway. So I put the stock mirrors back on and I think I will keep them on until I find a better option.

I also changed the rear sprocket to a black one I found online and did a quick head light grill mock up with tape just to see if I like it. I'm not sure if I will build an actual grill or not.
In a nut shell, it was very, very easy, and with a little work, this could be done without buying the kit from Japan.

You can domestically get the filter, it is K&N #RB-0510. Then you just need to find a ring for the filter to clamp to. I bet you could use a piece of steel pipe of the right diameter and thickness, cut down to a ring with a saw. See the instruction sheet after the cut.

Here the instructions descibe pulling off the stock airbox tube from your stock airbox. It is held in place with some rubber cement and comes out with just a little persuasion. In picture 2 you can see the supplied metal ring that comes with the kit. This is slipped over the end of the tube and is there for no reason other than to give the filter's hose clamp something to tighten down to.

The kit also comes with a cheap C-clamp and a metal "punch" which is nothing more than a thin metal tube of the right diameter. So you just pick a spot on the bottom of the tube, and use the clamp and the metal tube to punch a clean hole through the rubber. In picture 4 you see the plastic nipple that is also supplied with the kit. This nipple will fit nicely in the correctly made hole, and then you can push your breather tube from the stock airbox onto this nipple. Then it is just a matter of mounting the filter, and you are done. Don't forget you might need to rejet your carb once done, and if you are like me, you will make some sort of hanger for the filter (see post here http://osakacustomstyle.blogspot.com/2012/12/finished-home-made-filter-hanger.html).

It was quite simple really, with the help of a nice 4 cell mini battery from Anti-Gravity Batteries. I also used a basket designed specifically for the TW200/TW225. It sits nicely in the frame and is secured with zip-ties.Here are some pics.

As you can see, it is a rather tight fit, but with some fanegaling and more zip-ties, it all fit nice and neat.

These are originals from 1975, not the remake by Norix which I reviewed earlier. As you can see, Norix did a very, very fine job of reproducing the M30. And I have to say, most of the really, really cool looking motorcycle gear came out of the 1970s, which is interesting considering clothing styles of the same era are among the absolute worst, that is, until people snapped out of their hippish and disco ways and punk was born...
So I figured a proper review was in order.

My main helmet for comparison is a Shoei RF1100, which is a fantastic helmet with so many online reviews I needn't waste more Internet space with another. Suffice to say, the RF1100 is a superior helmet in every way. Very comfortable, cool and classic in matte black, and full of customizable features like top head vents and a chin/neck cover for colder weather. Now onto the M30. This helmet, is a licensed replica of the 1970s era Simpson M30, without a doubt, one of the coolest looking full face helmets ever made. The company manufacturing these helmets is called Norix, and they are based out of Canada. Unfortunately, these helmets are only available in Japan at the moment, and therefore DOT and Snell approvals have not been attached. That said, this helmet is no joke. It is not a novelty helmet, and judging by the strictness of the Japanese motorcycle licensing system, this helmet is a fully functional and hopefully tested crash helmet of the highest quality. It certainly feels that way on my head, and it felt that way when I bought it. The helmet is right around $500 USD, which puts the M30 in the upper price range for any motorcycle helmet. At first I was a little unsure of the comfort, as the helmet tended to press a little on my forehead, but after wearing it I can honestly say it is as comfortable as my RF1100. And the visor is phenomenal. I have both a clear (stock) and a smoked visor, which is what I have on the helmet now. The smoked visor is so dark, that in bright daylight your eyes will remain very happy, but you had better get home before sunset, otherwise you will be either riding blind or with bugs and wind in your watering eyes. Yes, it is that dark. But dark is what we are going for. The matte black version was the only option for me, and the finish is really nice and seems quite durable. The front vents in the mask portion of the helmet let plenty of fresh air pass right into your mouth and nose, which makes fogging minimal and lets breathing feel very normal. The chin strap is easy to lash and tuck away so it is not flapping while you are riding. Another nice thing about this helmet, is that all the stickers come off readily, so you are not left with the obnoxious SIMPSON logo spoiling your Darth Vader from hell look. Living the USA, the best option to get one of these helmets is through a Japanese auction site, like www.Noppin.com or Yahoo Auctions. You will pay through the nose, but you will be happy in your Simpson M30. Hopefully soon Norix will get them tested and licensed in the USA. I even think they look cool in white...if that is your thing.
For the last few days, the mornings have been filled with cold fog. I

The bike is running pretty good, but I think I need to re-jet the carb. It's also been quite hard to get started, and I'm not sure if that is due to the now uneven air/fuel mixture, or simply due to the extreme cold on my little Anti-Gravity gel battery. Once the bike warms up, it seems to fire over pretty easier. At some point, I want to pull of the wiring harness and clean up the front end. There is just too much coiled up and jammed behind the head light, and with a few Weatherpack connectors and it will look a lot cleaner. I also think I need to adjust the chain and rear wheel a little, and I still need to come up with something on the tank. Although the straight black is settling in well with me. At first I didn't like the cheap-o eBay mirrors (like $15) I have on their, but they are growing on me as well. All in all, I am very happy with the final product. It came out exactly as I envisioned and I cannot wait for some warmer weather!

More soon...

It also came with a metal ring that you shove over the stock boot so the new filter has something to clamp to. However, the one problem with adding cone filters like this to the TW200 is they tend to sag over time. So, I had an idea, and I mocked it up with part of an aluminum can from some tomatoes.
I am going to make another one and do it a little cleaner, paint it, and put a grommet through the hole I drilled. Worked out well.

The blacking out of the frame, the longer swing-arm, the road tires on black wheels, and the overall changes to the front end make the bike look basically nothing like a stock TW200. Its pretty amazing to see it all come together.
I've never seen one with this color combo, and I think it looks pretty sweet. Don't get me wrong, I think the TW200 is a nice looking bike in its stock configuration, but I don't really care for white and blue, etc. So I think this is pretty cool.
Everything is done except the ceramic coating on my exhaust pipe, which might take several weeks to complete due to lack of parts that need this expensive coating (says the powder-coater). Which is ok, since the bike will not be done for another 2 weeks at least. I am still waiting for my new seals and bearings, and my tires to come in. I also need to pick up some new folk oil, motor oil and a new oil filter from the local shop here to get everything back together. But for now, here is a view of the wheels! They look phenominal.
The matte black came out perfect. Exactly the right color. I am very happy with how everything turned out! First thing, was to cut off those useless tabs for holding on ugly plastic crap. One thing I never understood is why most of the customized TW200s I see never had these tabs removed, they just leave them on there, and in my opinion, they need to go. A quick zip of the cutoff wheel and you are free of the ugly tabs. Then just clean up the edges a little with a grinder. Done.

I got the edge pretty straight. Straight enough that you will not notice.

The tear down is complete. It took about 4 hours from start to finish, and was actually way easier than I anticipated. I still have a few things to sort out before I take parts in for powder-coating, but if things keep moving at this pace, I should have the bike done in a few weeks. I still need to order tires and a new battery, and I still need to sort out how I am going to hide the new battery and associated wiring.

This is the pile of parts that needs to go to the powder coater.

Here's a shot of the new swing arm next to the original.

The new swing arm does not have grease fittings, which kinda sucks. Oh well.

So now I need to figure out how to get the rubber off the wheels, and I need to get the parts ready for the powder-coater. I have to cut tabs off that will not be used, and take a few things apart further, but I should be able to get the stuff out the door this week!

First though, I decided to test fit the parts that are easy to throw on, just to see how things look and to begin to figure out which mounting tabs will get eliminated with the grinder.
